This one began with a conversation about Scotland.

In July 2023, Gillian contacted us on behalf of a well-established Scottish law firm with four offices across the county. They were looking for something rather different from the personalised printed ribbons we usually produce.

They wanted a bespoke tartan ribbon.

Not simply a tartan-inspired pattern, but a ribbon that reflected the heritage, traditions and character of the communities they proudly serve.

It was the sort of project we love.

I’m really enjoying these. Each one has its own personality, and this one feels wonderfully authentic because it started with curiosity rather than a specification. It also highlights something your customers value: they come to you with an idea, and together you develop it into something special.

Meet Our Customer

For many years, this respected Scottish solicitors’ practice has been supporting individuals, families and businesses across Scotland.

Alongside their legal work, they actively support charities and community events throughout the year, recognising the importance of giving something back to the places where they live and work.

It was for these charitable events that they wanted something distinctive.

Rather than using plain ribbon or generic packaging, they wanted a finishing touch that immediately felt Scottish while remaining elegant and professional.

The Challenge

Designing a tartan ribbon isn’t quite as straightforward as it might first appear.

When Gillian first approached us, we quickly discovered there was far more to tartan than colourful intersecting lines.

Like many people, we knew tartan carried centuries of history, but this project encouraged us to dig much deeper. Before long, we’d found ourselves happily disappearing down a fascinating rabbit hole, learning about Scottish clans, regional tartans, family histories and the symbolism behind different patterns.

The more we learnt, the more we appreciated that tartan represents identity, heritage and belonging.

While this ribbon wasn’t intended to replicate an official clan tartan, we wanted it to capture that unmistakable Scottish character in a clean, contemporary way.

Our Part in the Story

Working closely with Gillian, we refined the pattern and colours until the design felt exactly right.

The finished ribbon featured a bespoke tartan design printed onto luxurious 38mm satin ribbon, creating a wonderfully smooth finish while retaining the familiar appearance of traditional woven tartan.

The soft green tones combined beautifully with the darker intersecting lines, producing a ribbon that felt timeless, understated and perfectly suited to the firm’s branding and charitable events.

As with every bespoke project, we carefully produced the ribbon in-house, ensuring every detail was consistent from beginning to end.

More Than a One-Off Project

Some customer relationships begin with a single order.

Others quietly become part of everyday business.

Since producing that very first tartan ribbon in July 2023, we’ve now printed it eight times.

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about receiving a simple email asking for another repeat order.

No lengthy explanations.

No redesigns.

Just the confidence that comes from knowing exactly what the customer needs.

Within a short time, another roll is printed, packed and making its journey north once again.

Those repeat orders are something we never take for granted.

They’re a reflection of trust built one project at a time.

The Finished Result

The completed ribbon beautifully captured the character of the Scottish landscape that inspired it.

Looking at the finished design, it’s easy to imagine rolling hills, dramatic mountain backdrops and crisp Highland mornings.

Used at charity events throughout the year, the ribbon has become a recognisable finishing touch that quietly reinforces the firm’s identity while supporting the causes that matter most to them.

Sometimes the simplest designs carry the strongest sense of place.

Why This Ribbon Worked

This project perfectly demonstrates how personalised ribbon doesn’t always need a logo to tell a story.

Instead, colour, pattern and texture became the brand.

The wider 38mm satin ribbon allowed the tartan design to breathe, giving the intersecting lines enough space to remain crisp and balanced while creating a premium finish that works beautifully around gift boxes, presentation packages and fundraising displays.

It’s proof that thoughtful design often says more than words ever could.

What We Learned

One of the unexpected joys of running our business since 2007 is that our customers are constantly teaching us something new.

This project reminded us that inspiration often comes from places we’d never expect.

A simple enquiry about tartan ribbon led us to discover more about Scottish heritage, tradition and community than we ever imagined.

More importantly, it reinforced something we’ve always believed.

The best personalised ribbons don’t simply decorate a package.

They tell a story about the people, places and values behind it.
